| The amount of tropical timber used in flooring nowadays is considerable, although the number of different species currently used is far greater than in the past. This is because of the increasing difficulties experienced sourcing timbers which, thanks to their appearance or technological features, offered both the processors and the end users the best guarantees. This development has brought with it certain drawbacks of a technical nature, as it is not always known exactly how a large number of the latest species available on the market react when put to this different use. All too often, although the timbers used are very similar to the much-loved traditional ones in terms of looks, they act quite differently once laid. This has resulted in some nasty surprises for all those involved, from the manufacturers to the layers and the purchasers. In addition to this concern, it is worth remembering that that even within the same species there are varying reactions which are set off by certain triggers. Finally, the different behaviour of the various species can be controlled, but to do so it is important to know the properties of the wood you intend to use and to check that characteristics of the material available tally (within the limits of the natural variability) with those known for the given species. This means you must be certain of the name and origin of the material you intend to use. 1 | 2 |
